CO2-meter
Carbondioxide is not a toxic gas. Trees can even thrive on higher CO2-concentrations, as this enhances the fotosynthesis process that produces oxygen.
Experiments showed that trees can hold up to 20% more carbon if the CO2-concentration is increased artificially. But there’s still a big difference between types of forests, and every one of them is a complex system on its own, with a whole set of factors, so it’s hard to generalise on the effects of CO2.
Ozon meter
Ozon does not only cause irritation on our respiratory system, it’s also harmful for trees. It’s absorbed by the leaves through their stomata: microscopic mouths exchanging oxygen, vapor and CO2 with the air. In doing so, it can damage the cells and the fotosynthesis particles, slowing down the growth of the tree. High ozon concentrations can also damage the surface of the leaf with 'ozon dots'.
Soot meter
Most dust particles are too small to be assimilated by the stomata. But soot can block them and prevent the exchange of gases with the atmosphere. The reaction of some trees is to create smaller stomata. Ultimately, the soot is washed off the leaf and ends in te soil. If it’s toxic, its impact on the soil will have an impact on the tree.
